The 20th century began with professional practice in many fields of science, business and industry based on determinism. Technological developments forced scientists, engineers, economists, medical researchers, and business managers to adopt a broader view that incorporated the impact of uncertainty and variability in decision making. This has led to significant advances in both the development and application of new statistical methodology. The use of statistics in science, business, and industry, including applications in new product design and development, optimization and control of manufacturing processes, and in services continues to expand at a rapid rate. This presentation traces some of the key developments and suggests some trends for the future.
