Meeting in Newcastle (September 2005)

The fourth meeting of the Interest Group on "Statistical Modelling" was held in Newcastle during the Fifth Annual ENBIS Conference 2005.

MINUTES

The meeting was attended by 3 people (Ruggeri, Seabra and Engel) and other 2 gave their contribution later (Goeb and Volf). The workshop organised by Goeb and Pievatolo on "Advanced fields of statistical modelling" at the Newcastle conference was a success. We plan to organise another one at the next meeting in Wroclaw. One possibility is about Probability and Elicitiation, possibly in cooperation with the Interest Group on Reliability. A possible special issue of Kybernetika will be considered to promote ENBIS in central and eastern Europe. Ruggeri will contact John Hinde, chair of the Statistical Modelling Society, for a possible cooperation. (more)

Meeting in Copenhagen (22/9/2004)

The fourth meeting of the Interest Group on "Statistical Modelling" was held in Copenhagen during the Fourth Annual ENBIS Conference, on September, 22nd, 2004.

MINUTES

The meeting was attended by 7 people (Kuhnt, Raabe, Pievatolo, Goeb, Volf, Engel and Ruggeri, coordinator). There was a report on the publication of the ASMBI (Applied Stochastic Modelling in Business and Industrial Statistics) issue with papers from the conference in Rimini (2002) edited by Polasek and Ruggeri, on the status of the issue of SMIJ (Statistical Modelling; an International Journal) with papers from the conference in Barcelona (2003) edited by Engel and Frigessi, and the workshop organised by Volf in Prague in May 2004. Participants discussed about the difficulty in organising joint activities and they decided to collect some information on advanced statistical methods and put them on the web site and organise a workshop on such topic at the next ENBIS conference in Newcastle in 2005. As a possible outlet for future papers, the Czech journal Kybernetika was suggested. (more)

The third meeting of the Interest Group on "Statistical Modelling" was held in Barcelona during the Third Annual ENBIS Conference, on August, 22nd, 2003.

MINUTES

The participants regretted that the timing for the meetings of the interest groups was not good: the meetings should be brought back to earlier in the conference and not held very late in the last day of the conference. The coordinator (Fabrizio Ruggeri) reported on the current activities of the group: a special issue of Applied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry, edited by Polasek and Ruggeri, and a special issue of Statistical Modelling: an International Journal, edited by Engel and Frigessi. The former issue was almost ready whereas for the latter submissions were still possible. There was a discussion on ways to make the Group more active, including sponsoring conferences (e.g. one in Czech Republic in May, 2004). The coordinator will contact members of the Group to decide an action plan for 2004, with the idea of having the group more and more focused on new frontiers in statistical modelling. (more)

The third meeting of the Working Group on "Statistical Modelling" was held in Rimini during the Second Annual ENBIS Conference, on September, 23rd, 2002.

DISCUSSION

The meeting has been opened by a report by the Coordinator on the activities in the last year, which focused mainly in the organisation of some sessions at the Second Annual ENBIS Conference in Rimini. The participants at the meeting agreed that more people should be involved in the organisation of the Working Group.

After the discussion, the Group agreed on some points which are summarised in the following

ACTION PLAN OF THE GROUP

Ragnar Huseby will become the webmaster of the Group, moving the web site to his Institute. Contributions and suggestions by Group members are welcome.

Jesus Palomo will be in charge of the organisation of Group sessions at the third Annual ENBIS conference in Barcelona. Efforts will be spent in order to have sessions with homogeneous topics. Members are invited to get in touch with Jesus Palomo and send him abstracts.

Soren Andersen will collect opinions about possible speakers, related to the Group, to suggest as invited speakers at the third Annual ENBIS conference.

Authors of papers presented in the Group related sessions in Rimini will be asked to submit their papers or presentation to the Group Webmaster (Fabrizio Ruggeri, until Ragnar Huseby will start taking care of the Group web site).

Members (at least the ones participant at the meeting) will be asked to submit some of their papers and problems to the Group Webmaster (Fabrizio Ruggeri, until Ragnar Huseby will start taking care of the Group web site), with the goal of finding fields for possible cooperation.

Wolfgang Polasek and Fabrizio Ruggeri will be in charge of a special issue of Applied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry with papers from the Group or related to it, not necessarily presented in Rimini. A Call for Papers will be sent around as soon as a final agreement will be done with the journal's Editor. The issue should be ready for the Third Annual ENBIS Conference.

Possible endorsement of workshop and organisation of courses or schools. Contact will be taken, for example, with the organisers of the Third Workshop on Bayesian Inference and Stochastic Processes (to be held in Spain in 2003), so that a Group session will be organised at that conference. Members are invited to suggest other conferences for a possible cooperation.

Choice of a coordinator, Fabrizio Ruggeri, which will be in charge until the Third Annual ENBIS Conference.

Meeting in Oslo (18/9/2001)

The second meeting of the Working Group on "Statistical Modelling" was held in Oslo during the First Annual ENBIS Conference, on September, 18th, 2001.

DISCUSSION

The meeting has been opened by a report by the Coordinator on the activities in the last year. The participant at the meeting agreed that the Working Group should focus on ``hot topics'' (e.g. statistics in telecommunications, as in the workshop sponsored in 2001) and resources on them should be made available for a possible interaction among group's members. Pro-ENBIS could be the proper environment in which workshops on ``hot topics'' could be organised.

Meeting in Amsterdam (11/12/2000)

The first meeting of the Working Group on "Statistical Modelling" was held in Amsterdam during the Founding Conference of ENBIS, on December, 11th, 2000.

DISCUSSION

The meeting has been opened by a report by the Coordinator on the answers he got from Group members on a questionnaire (see the text) he sent all of them ten days before the conference.

Before discussing goals and life of the Group, all the members introduced themselves and their research interests and expertise.

All the members observed the peculiar nature of the Working Group which makes it very different from the others. It does not focus on a well specified area of research but, as suggested by its name, its interests are very broad. This nature can be both the weakness and the strength of the Group. On one side, people could hardly find reasons to participate in the Group activities since it is not clear what the Group is for. On the other side, a lot of opportunities are offered to the Group if it becomes able to provide scientific and industrial communities a discussion forum in which practitioners can find a wide, commented, selection of models, link to useful resources, discussions on the possibility of using similar models in very different context, whereas researchers can find applications to models presented in the literature. At the same time, open problems should be posed and discussed by Group members and others in order to find adequate models. Relevant data sets should be analysed within the Group. The Group members who attended the meeting were confident on the possibility of pursuing the latter goal, even if it will take a large personal involvement in buiding the network, both in terms of acquiring and spreading information and enlarging the group of active members.

Exchanges with other ENBIS Working Groups and other professional organisations have been deemed necessary, as well. Cooperation with all of them will be sought in the future, once the Group will be structured and become active. An important role can be played by the cooperation with the International Workshop on Statistical Modelling (IWSM), which could lead to the organisation of a session at their annual meeting. The organisation of a workshop by the Group has been discussed but, at the moment, it seems more reasonable to contribute to other conferences, e.g. those which emphasise the interaction between industries/businesses and universities/research institutions and deals with new, relevant applications of statistical methodologies. It was decided to give the Group's support to a conference on "Statistics and Telecommunications" which will be held in Italy in July 2001 where the first day's tutorial and introductory seminars will be followed by a one day workshop with talks by people in both academia and industries. The support to the conference will be an opportunity to let local people know about the Working Group and ENBIS. Group members agreed in communicating conferences of possible interest for the Group. The Working Group will give its contribution to the Second ENBIS Congress organising a session (possibly, a case study).
