Abstract

This paper studies the design of the control chart for monitoring the process standard deviation in the situation that the limits are estimated. Different estimators of the standard deviation are considered and factors used to get accurate control limits for moderate sample sizes, are derived. The resulting control charts are evaluated in the in-control and in the out-of-control situation, both under normality and under non-normality. The results show that the chart based on Gini's mean sample differences performs well under normality and is most robust against deviations from normality.
