Abstract
As the complexity of the IT infrastructures and applications which support business and industry increases, so does the importance of the metadata which provides information about all of the elements of those infrastructures and the relationships between those elements.

Lance Mitchell will introduce the session with the generally accepted definitions of metadata and some of its commonly associated terms, and what all of this means to him. He will then describe the steps in building, populating and using an effective metadata repository to support high quality IT services. He will use a real case to bring this description to life.

The session will be presented from the perspective of an IT practitioner.

This presentation has two objectives. The first is to enlighten the audience regarding the use of metadata in IT Service Management. The second is to inspire the audience into providing some helpful feedback from the perspective of practicing statisticians. You may be able to make creative and useful suggestions as to how metadata might be more effectively maintained and, perhaps, how the quality of metadata can be assured. Following this session, you might also suggest some imaginative ways to measure the value of metadata to the IT and business services which it supports.

Lance Mitchell is Managing Director and Senior Consultant at Greenfield Research and an Enterprise Solutions Engineer at Allen Systems Group.
